SNOW RICH Tourism

10Craftsmanship developed as a result of deep snowTokamachi’s heavy snowfall influenced the production of kimonos in more ways than just creating an obvious need for warm clothing. 1300 years of experience in textiles and nearly a century with the modern kimono have resulted in a culmination of a wide variety of skills that visitors can not only see, but try first-hand. From hand-dyeing and hand-weaving experiences at a kimono factory in the city, to Tie-dyeing and a stenciled dyeing technique called suri-yūzen and hand-painted yūzen, visitors can experience the challenges and delights of these kimono coloring techniques. A result of being “locked down” due to heavy snow, artisans spent the majority of winter inside, intently focused on developing and honing kimono manufacturing skills. Visitors will particularly enjoy the Craftsmen Directory event, the only one of its kind, where the kimono factories in Tokamachi are open to the public.3Kimonos Influenced by Snow
